How Do You See the World?

The Christian Science Publishing House is home to the Pulitzer Prize-winning Christian Science Monitor and the Mapparium, a one-of-a-kind 30’ wide immersive glass globe that is one of the most popular visitor attractions in Boston. We created a dozen linear and interactive media exhibits for the central welcome hall and two adjacent galleries that support a message of global humanity.

“Real progress begins with… a powerful idea that inspires action, actions which can then bring life-altering change.”

Book Interactive

An augmented reality book that dynamically explores the life and writings of Christian Science founder, Mary Baker Eddy.

Marker detection and motion tracking interpret user input to project video animations that interplay with the imagery physically printed on each page.

CHALLENGES

Define unique page markers to trigger different videos on each page spread

Configure depth camera-based hotspot interaction

Projection map videos onto printed illustrations

Welcome Hall

The Welcome Hall is the entry for the visitor experience. Overhead, a 5-projector, ultra-wide immersive video projects onto 14 banners across a 90-foot long wall featuring a collage of landscapes, people and cultures. An original two-hour music composition unites two additional media elements to create a welcoming space of reflection.

Challenges

Create seamless animations across 14 surfaces

Maintain pixel fidelity across a 90ft projection

Orientation Film

A circular film inset within a table of two 75” 4k monitors that explores visitor opportunities at the plaza and the history of Christian Science.

The circular table format was chosen to both echo the architectural elements of the space and create an experience where the audience would face each other in a non-traditional presentation.

Christian Science Monitor Table

News stories from The Christian Science Monitor are featured in an interactive table presented as a timeline extended across a 3 x 2 grid of 49″ monitors. Visitors can open and share stories across the grid.

Challenges

Create layered approach to unpacking news articles

Design content to account for simultaneous user input across multiple screens

Mary Baker Eddy Library Table

Highlighting the Mary Baker Eddy Library’s collection, this interactive table spans three, 4k monitors where visitors can view artifacts from a central river of images.

This facilitates an informative, tactile exploration of the Church’s artifacts, many of which visitors may not otherwise see.

CHALLENGES

Ensure central display is accessible from all sides

Adjust animations for monitor’s pixel display

Our World: Mapping Progress

This area encompasses two interactive experiences:

Points of Progress highlights societal advancements as markers on a spinnable 3D globe at three interactive kiosks while a projector animates corresponding points on a physical world map.

Faces of Change features articles from The Christian Science Monitor of individuals driving positive community change. Presented on eight, 55″ kiosks, each station offers three different interactive stories.
